    Molniya" (GRAU-8K78 index) is a single-use four-stage medium-class launch vehicle. It is part of the R-7 family of launch vehicles.
    Designed by OKB-1 in 1959-1960.It was developed for launching interplanetary vehicles to Venus and Mars, then for launching lunar vehicles of the E-6 series ("Luna-4" — "Luna-14"), for which the control system was significantly modified. It became famous in connection with the launches of Molniya communications satellites into highly elliptical orbits.
    After the modernization of the first and second stage engines, it received the name "Molniya-M". It served as the basis for the creation of three-stage versions of "Voskhod" and "Soyuz".
    The first launch of the RN 8K78 from the Baikonur cosmodrome was on October 10, 1960, and from the Plesetsk cosmodrome on February 19, 1970. On September 30, 2010, the last launch of the Molniya-M launch vehicle was made from the Plesetsk cosmodrome.
